APEX Takes Industry Leaders Behind the Scenes for Inflight Applications at Royal Geographical Society and Inmarsat


(NEW YORK) – The Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) added to a string of recent successes with an Educational Session devoted to “geo-entertainment” and WiFi last month in London. The two-day event drew 140 attendees representing 13 countries, who turned out for presentations and discussions given by Google, Delta, United and other major industry players. Survey respondents hailed the event as beneficial for improving the airline passenger experience. More than nine in 10 rated it as “good” or “excellent”.

The event – hosted at the Royal Geographic Society’s Historic Lowther Lodge and the Inmarsat Conference Center – is part of APEX’s ongoing series of global educational gatherings designed to bring current topics of interest to association members around the world. Last fall, an event in Santiago, Chile included a lively panel discussion on wireless IFE and portable devices, as well as a tour of LAN’s 787. Upcoming events are planned for China, North America, South America and Europe.

“I was very pleased to learn that APEX was hosting an educational event right in my backyard,” Fergus Boyd, senior manager for e-business strategy at Virgin Atlantic, said. “Attending the event was very beneficial, as I was not only able to learn from the sessions over the two days but also network with colleagues from near and far during the reception.”

Sessions covered a range of IFE and connectivity topics, but the theme on Day 1 was largely centered on geo-entertainment content. Passengers are increasingly interested in this emerging trend that allows them to learn about geography and history as it relates to sites along the flight path. Day 2 further explored hot topics such as connectivity, bandwidth, streaming and use of portable devices inflight. APEX Educational Sessions help to keep members ahead of such trends.

“Whenever I learn APEX is hosting an event, I make every effort to assure I’m there; so making my way to London for the March Educational Event was well worth the trip, as usual,” said Dr. Stephan Schulte, product manager for Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg, Germany. “I was able to learn quite a bit from the presentations and panel discussions. What was also very useful was the dynamic Q&A that engaged the audience and got us all thinking even more. It’s great to learn about the different perspectives – spanning from airline to aircraft OEMs and from system OEMs to the integrators. Looking forward to the next APEX event!”

In addition to Educational Event, APEX will host the annual TV Market Conference in Lisbon this month and the APEX/IFSA EXPO in Anaheim, Calif. in September.
